SUMMARY:Waterford Readers Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Join the library for a monthly book club! We will primarily be reading mysteries and thrillers but other genres may be included from time to time. Our pick for April 28th is Recursion by Blake Crouch. Copies are available at the check-out desk for pickup during the month of April. No registration is required. Please note that this book club takes place after the library is closed. We recommend arriving at least 15 minutes prior to the start of book club if you wish to check out items or peruse our collection. \nMEMORY MAKES REALITY. \nThat’s what New York City cop Barry Sutton is learning\, as he investigates the devastating phenomenon the media has dubbed False Memory Syndrome—a mysterious affliction that drives its victims mad with memories of a life they never lived. That’s what neuroscientist Helena Smith believes. It’s why she’s dedicated her life to creating a technology that will let us preserve our most precious memories. If she succeeds\, anyone will be able to re-experience a first kiss\, the birth of a child\, the final moment with a dying parent. As Barry searches for the truth\, he comes face to face with an opponent more terrifying than any disease—a force that attacks not just our minds but the very fabric of the past. And as its effects begin to unmake the world as we know it\, only he and Helena\, working together\, will stand a chance at defeating it.

SUMMARY:Poetic Voice & the Eavesdropping Reader
DESCRIPTION:Some poems unfold through dialogue\, speech to a third party\, and self talk. Poetic narrators\, like playwrights\, can erect a “fourth wall” so that the reader must eavesdrop on the poem as they would on a staged drama. In this workshop\, we will read several poems and discuss their use of voice before turning to a generative exercise\, writing time and an opportunity to share.  \nThis program is open to ages 16 and up. Registration is required and opens on April 2nd. \nRhonda Rosenheck is an emerging poet and writer. Her publications include: The Five Books of Limericks; Sin No More! A Biblical Sea Shanty; Looking: Out\, Up\, In & Under Rocks; and Yiddische Yoga: OYsanas for Every Generation. Individual poems have appeared in magazines\, journals and anthologies and have been performed live. Rhonda often uses creative writing to move her through the trauma of illness and grief. She writes in her Waterford\, NY studio\, the Poet’s Perch. Learn more about Rhonda on her website: www.rhondarosenheck.com

SUMMARY:Golden Leaves Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the Golden Leaves Book Club\, run by Shaunty McMillin\, owner of Golden Leaf Books here in Waterford. This is a book club focused on fantasy and romantasy reads. Light refreshments will be provided. No registration necessary. Please note that this book club takes place after normal library hours. We will be discussing Quicksilver by Callie Hart on May 18th from 6-7. Limited copies are available for pickup at the Waterford Public Library during the month of May. \nTwenty-four-year-old Saeris Fane is good at keeping secrets. No one knows about the strange powers she possesses\, or the fact that she has been picking pockets and stealing from the Undying Queen’s reservoirs for as long as she can remember. In the land of the unforgiving desert\, there isn’t much a girl wouldn’t do for a glass of water. But a secret is like a knot. Sooner or later\, it is bound to come undone. \nWhen Saeris comes face-to-face with Death himself\, she inadvertently reopens a gateway between realms and is transported to a land of ice and snow. The Fae have always been the stuff of myth\, of legend\, of nightmares…but it turns out they’re real\, and Saeris has landed right in the middle of a centuries-long conflict that might just get her killed. \nThe first of her kind to tread the frozen mountains of Yvelia in over a thousand years\, Saeris mistakenly binds herself to Kingfisher\, a handsome Fae warrior\, who has secrets and nefarious agendas of his own. He will use her Alchemist’s magic to protect his people\, no matter what it costs him… or her. Death has a name. It is Kingfisher of the Ajun Gate. His past is murky. His attitude stinks. And he’s the only way Saeris is going to make it home. \n

SUMMARY:Waterford Readers Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Join the library for a monthly book club! We will primarily be reading mysteries and thrillers but other genres may be included from time to time. Our pick for May 26th is The Book Club for Troublesome Women by Marie Bostwick. Copies are available at the check-out desk for pickup during the month of May. No registration is required. Please note that this book club takes place after the library is closed. We recommend arriving at least 15 minutes prior to the start of book club if you wish to check out items or peruse our collection. \nBy early 1960s standards\, Margaret Ryan\, Viv Buschetti\, and Bitsy Cobb\, suburban housewives in a brand-new “planned community” in Northern Virginia\, appear to have it all. The fact that “all” doesn’t feel like enough leaves them feeling confused and guilty\, certain the fault must lie with them. Things begin to change when they form a book club with Charlotte Gustafson–the eccentric and artsy “new neighbor” from Manhattan–and read Betty Friedan’s just-released book\, The Feminine Mystique. But is it really the book that alters the lives of these four very different women? Or is it the bond of sisterhood that helps them find courage to confront the past\, navigate turmoil in a rapidly changing world\, and see themselves in a new and limitless light?

SUMMARY:Online Author Talk: Dr. Ezekiel J. Emanuel
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an empowering conversation with health expert Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel as he shares his vision for living well and aging with purpose. In Eat Your Ice Cream: Six Simple Rules for a Long and Healthy Life\, he explores how to embrace health\, happiness\, and longevity without falling for quick fixes or unrealistic promises. \nEveryone wants to live a full and healthy life―and every day brings a tidal wave of attention-grabbing misinformation\, faddish ideas from “wellness” influencers\, and bizarre advice from news outlets. The “Wellness Industrial Complex” prescribes conflicting and complicated regimens while promising us more time to enjoy in the future―though it sure is demanding a lot of time right now. But what actually matters most to our health and longevity? \nIn Eat Your Ice Cream\, renowned physician Ezekiel J. Emanuel argues that life is not a competition to live the longest and that “wellness” shouldn’t be difficult; it should be an invisible part of one’s lifestyle that yields maximum health benefits with the least work. Dr. Emanuel cuts through the noise with wit and good humor\, giving readers just what they need: simple\, high-impact\, evidence-based guidelines on such issues as alcohol consumption\, food and nutrition\, exercise\, sleep\, and social engagement. \nResisting the tide of the latest trends to extend life at all costs\, Eat Your Ice Cream reveals that many of the tools for a long\, healthy and meaningful life are already within reach. \nRegister now to hear incredible tips on living a full and healthy life: https://libraryc.org/waterfordlibraryNY/163933/register \nAbout the Author: \nEzekiel J. Emanuel\, MD\, PhD\, is the Vice Provost for Global Initiatives\, the Co-Director of the Healthcare Transformation Institute\, and a Professor at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine. \nEmanuel is an oncologist and world leader in health policy and bioethics. He is a Special Advisor to the Director General of the World Health Organization\, Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress\, and member of the Council on Foreign Relations.  He was the founding chair of the Department of Bioethics at the National Institutes of Health and held that position until August of 2011. \nDr. Emanuel is the most widely cited bioethicist in history.  He has over 350 publications and has authored or edited 15 books.
