SUMMARY:Capital Roots Produce Drop-Off
DESCRIPTION:Capital Roots’ Squash Hunger program is a food donation initiative that collects and distributes more than 40 tons of fresh produce to our region’s food pantries and shelters each year. The Waterford Library receives its delivery between 10:30 – 11:00 a.m. each Wednesday morning. \nSince 2004 Capital Roots has involved thousands of community members in our effort to increase the presence of fresh food on communal tables. We rely on generous gardeners\, farmers and grocery shoppers to donate fresh produce to our collection bins and on volunteers to deliver it to food pantries and shelters\, some of which feed more than 100 people three meals a day\, every day.

SUMMARY:Online Author Talk: Alex Hutchinson
DESCRIPTION:In The Explorer’s Gene: Why We Seek Big Challenges\, New Flavors\, and the Blank Spots on the Map\, Alex Hutchinson dives headfirst into a fascinating and provocative new field of research\, examining how exploration is a fundamental part of what makes us human. \nOff the beaten path\, on unmarked trails\, we are wired to explore. More than just a need to get outside\, the search for the unknown is a specific\, primal urge that has shaped the history of our species and continues to mold our behavior in ways we are just beginning to understand. In fact\, the latest neuroscience suggests that exploration is an essential ingredient of human life. Exploration\, it turns out\, isn’t merely a hobby—it’s our story. \nAnd yet\, it has never been easier to live an exploration-free life\, without the struggle and uncertainty that true exploration—of places\, experiences\, and ideas—requires. With the digital world designed to exploit the neural circuitry behind our drive to explore\, we receive the illusion of novelty without accompanying growth. \nFrom paddling the lost rivers of the northern Canadian wilderness to the ocean-spanning voyages of the Polynesians\, The Explorer’s Gene combines riveting stories of exploration with cutting-edge insights from behavioral psychology and neuroscience. The end result offers a singular approach to finding meaning in our past struggles\, embracing the possibility of failure in our future\, and crucially\, recognizing when our present is good enough. \nRegister now to participate in this timelessly relevant discussion: https://libraryc.org/waterfordlibraryNY/152918/register \nAbout the Author: Alex Hutchinson is a National Magazine Award-winning science journalist with a big-picture focus on human performance and particular interests in fitness\, endurance sports\, and the outdoors. He is Outside magazine’s longtime Sweat Science columnist\, and his writing also appears in The Atlantic\, The New Yorker\, and elsewhere. Before journalism\, he was a postdoctoral physicist at the National Security Agency and a long-distance runner for the Canadian national team. He lives in Toronto with his wife and daughters. \n

SUMMARY:Backyard Bird Feeding
DESCRIPTION:Whether you’re brand new to bird feeding or looking to level up your backyard habitat\, this quick primer presented by Carol Quantock from the Audubon Society of the Capital Region will give you practical tools to turn your outdoor space into a favorite stop for local birds. \n\n\nWhich feeders and foods draw different birds\nHow to welcome birds without overfeeding the squirrels\nSimple ways to make your yard safe and inviting\nBird Feeding and Care\n\nCarol Quantock is a local environmental advocate and native plant gardener. She has been an active birder for almost 50 years\, and is the editor of the Audubon Society of the Capital Region’s newsletter\, Wingbeats as well as the organization’s Vice President. Her interest and passion for birding evolved from extensive real-time experience. That experience was enhanced greatly when she took an ornithology course at SUNY Albany\, where she became immersed in “all things bird.” Carol is also a Cornell Cooperative Extension (Saratoga County) Master Gardener\, earning her certificate in May of 2021. She is an avid native plant gardener\, concentrating on the plants that co-evolved with local wildlife and insects. \nAll are welcome to attend. SUMMARY:Waterford Readers Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Join the library for a monthly book club! We will primarily be reading mysteries and thrillers but other genres may be included from time to time. Our pick for April 28th is Recursion by Blake Crouch. Copies are available at the check-out desk for pickup during the month of April. No registration is required. Please note that this book club takes place after the library is closed. We recommend arriving at least 15 minutes prior to the start of book club if you wish to check out items or peruse our collection. \nMEMORY MAKES REALITY. \nThat’s what New York City cop Barry Sutton is learning\, as he investigates the devastating phenomenon the media has dubbed False Memory Syndrome—a mysterious affliction that drives its victims mad with memories of a life they never lived. That’s what neuroscientist Helena Smith believes. It’s why she’s dedicated her life to creating a technology that will let us preserve our most precious memories. If she succeeds\, anyone will be able to re-experience a first kiss\, the birth of a child\, the final moment with a dying parent. As Barry searches for the truth\, he comes face to face with an opponent more terrifying than any disease—a force that attacks not just our minds but the very fabric of the past. And as its effects begin to unmake the world as we know it\, only he and Helena\, working together\, will stand a chance at defeating it.

SUMMARY:Poetic Voice & the Eavesdropping Reader
DESCRIPTION:Some poems unfold through dialogue\, speech to a third party\, and self talk. Poetic narrators\, like playwrights\, can erect a “fourth wall” so that the reader must eavesdrop on the poem as they would on a staged drama. In this workshop\, we will read several poems and discuss their use of voice before turning to a generative exercise\, writing time and an opportunity to share.  \nThis program is open to ages 16 and up. Registration is required and opens on April 2nd. \nRhonda Rosenheck is an emerging poet and writer. Her publications include: The Five Books of Limericks; Sin No More! A Biblical Sea Shanty; Looking: Out\, Up\, In & Under Rocks; and Yiddische Yoga: OYsanas for Every Generation. Individual poems have appeared in magazines\, journals and anthologies and have been performed live. Rhonda often uses creative writing to move her through the trauma of illness and grief. She writes in her Waterford\, NY studio\, the Poet’s Perch. Learn more about Rhonda on her website: www.rhondarosenheck.com
